 January

Inventory seeds

Order seeds, seed potatoes, strawberry plants

Collect manure for compost

Prune peaches and make sure they’re covered against peach leaf curl

Weed rhubarb.  Sea soil and ash on rhubarb, cover with remay


Weeks 3 & 4

  • Seed in trays/pots: snap peas, spinach, bok choi, broccoli raab, salad brassica’s (arugula, mizuna, etc), celeriac (W) and celery, perennial arugula, parsley 
  • Direct Seed (cold frame): spinach, Japanese turnips* radish*, cilantro, dill, chervil, claytonia, mache, salad brassicas  
  • Direct Seed (outside): broad beans

February 

Turn beds if weather permits

Weed and divide perennials

Prune apples and pears

Plant fruit trees

Side dress garlic and raspberries with compost


Weeks 1 & 2

  • Seed in trays/pots: +spinach and other greens as above, parsley.  1st- lettuces, beets, onions, leeks (W), scallions, tomatoes for farm, endive and radicchio, fennel, broccoli, shungiku, artichokes, chard, kale, collards, mustards
  • Direct Seed (cold frame): +herbs, Japanese turnip, radish.  1st- carrots*, peas*, orach* and shungiku*
  • Direct Seed (outside): +broad beans.  1st- early peas* and early potatoes* (weather permitting)

Weeks 3 & 4

  • Seed in trays: 1st- early cabbage, cauliflower

March

Plant strawberries, weed and feed old strawberries.  

Transplant Jan/Feb seedlings to cold frame and outside.


Weeks 1 & 2

  • Seed in trays/pots: +chard, spinach, greens as above, bok choi, lettuces, scallions, kale, collards, mustards, tomatoes for market sales, parsley
  • Direct Seed (cold frame): +Jap turnip, radish, herbs   
  • Direct Seed (outside): +broad beans, early peas and early potatoes.  1st- spinach, sunflowers, bok choi, salad brassicas etc. 

Week 3&4

  • Seed in trays/pots: +bok choi, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.  1st cukes, basil, eggplant, tomatillo

April

Weeks 1 & 2

  • Seed in trays:+lettuces (every 2weeks to 1month to Sept), bok choi, chard, scallions, fennel 
  • Direct Seed (outside): +potatoes, peas, spinach, salad brassica’s etc.  1st- radish, carrots, beets*, herbs, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, runner beans, parsnips(W), kohlrabi 

Weeks 3 & 4 

  • Seed in trays/pots: +lettuces, cukes, basil.  1st- summer squash
  • Direct Seed (outside): +peas 

May

Weeks 1 & 2

  • Seed in trays/pots: +lettuces, chard.  1st- early brussel sprouts, winter squash   
  • Direct Seed (outside): +potatoes, green beans, carrots, beets, radish, salad brassica’s etc.  1st- corn*, green beans*  

Weeks 3 & 4

  • Seed in trays/pots: +lettuces, summer squash/2
  • Direct Seed (outside): +green beans, corn

June

Weeks 1 & 2

  • Seed in trays/pots: +lettuces, salad brassica’s etc, brussel sprouts(W), kale(W), chard(W).  1st- belgian endive(W)
  • Direct Seed (outside): +potatoes, green beans, carrots, beets.  1st- basil, rutabaga(W)

Weeks 3 & 4

  • Seed in trays/pots: +lettuces, summer squash/3.  1st- sprouting broccoli(W), cauliflower(W), cabbage(W)
  • Direct Seed (outside):  +green beans

July

Weeks 1 & 2

  • Seed in trays/pots:  +lettuces, fall cabbage, radicchio(W), frisee, green onions(W).  1st- overwintering onions (walla walla)  
  • Direct Seed (outside):  +salad brassica’s etc, carrots(W), beets(W).  1st- turnips(W)

Weeks 3 & 4

  • Seed in trays/pots:  +lettuces, bok choi.  1st- napa cabbage 
  • Direct Seed (cold frame):  1st- winter radish(W)
  • Direct Seed (outside):  +kohlrabi(W), peas(late crop).  1st- daikon(W)    

August

Green manure or mulch beds as crops come out.

Weeks 1 & 2

  • Seed in trays/pots:  +lettuces(W), salad brassica’s etc(W), spinach(W), mustards(W), broccoli raab(W), bok choi(W), napa cabbage(W) 
  • Direct Seed (cold frame): +salad brassica’s etc(W), spinach(W), mustards(W), mache(W), claytonia(W), minutina(W), winter radish(W)     
  • Direct Seed (outside):  +spinach(W)

Weeks 3 & 4

  • Seed in trays/pots:  +lettuces(W), bok choi, salad brassica’s etc(W), spinach(W), mustards(W), bok choi(W), napa cabbage(W)
  • Direct Seed (cold frame):  + salad brassica’s etc(W), spinach(W), mustards(W), mache(W), claytonia(W), minutina(W)

September

Green manure or mulch beds as crops come out. 

Weeks 1-4

  • Seed in trays/pots:  +lettuces(W), bok choi, salad brassica’s etc(W), spinach(W), mustards(W), bok-choi(W)
  •  Direct Seed (cold frame): +herbs (cilantro, dill, chervil)(W), salad brassica’s etc(W), spinach(W), mustards(W), mache(W), claytonia(W).   1st- daikon(W), winter radish(W)

October

Green manure or mulch beds as crops come out.

Make sure winter crops are protected against the weather as needed.  Cover with soil, remay and/or mulch and stake against the wind as necessary.  

Cut worm and slug patrol in cold frames (esp. chard and brassica’s)

Make sure crops go into the cold with moist soil, dry soil and freezing temp. is hard on the root system. 

Collect manures and other materials for composting.

Top dress rhubarb with manure.     


Weeks 1-4

  • Seed in trays/pots or Direct Seed (cold frame): +salad brassica’s etc(W), spinach(W), mustards(W), mache(W), claytonia(W).   
  • Direct Seed (outside):  1st- garlic.

November

Weeks 1-4

  • Direct Seed (outside):  1st- broad beans


December

  • Direct Seed (outside):  +broad bean
